Co-operative Community Health Centre (CCHC)

We have been operating our Co-operative Community Health Centre (CCHC) at 547 Michigan St. in James Bay since September 1st, 2010 and want to share some of the basic facts with VCHC members and the wider community.

Your CCHC Wellness Team. You are the leader in your own wellness. If you can think of a word that embodies this concept better than “patient” please let us know! We need something more pro-active and co-operative! Your wellness team, led by you, includes our BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)-funded practitioners, the Medical Office Assistants, the Complementary and Alternative (CAM) Practitioners, the Health Centre Manager and the Board and all the member-owners of the Victoria Community Health Co-op who are working to ensure the best possible service to our members and our community.

The practitioners (MSP-funded and CAM) at the CCHC are working towards fully Integrative Primary Health Care – the first such Health Co-op in BC.

Eligibility: Every person who was previously a patient at the James Bay Community Clinic is eligible for services at the CCHC. Membership in the VCHC is not a requirement. That would contravene the Canada Health Act.

Our MSP-funded practitioners.

Our current MSP-funded practitioners are: Deanna Wildeman – Midwife; plus four Family Physicians – Derek Carroll, Rick Hudson, Mark Sherman, and Gary Wolfson.

We will be able gradually to increase the number of people for whom our Nurse Practitioner and Family Physicians can provide care. Getting to this point has involved updating our Electronic Medical Records system, fulfilling the new government billing requirements, and bringing new practitioners into the VCHC.

If you are a current “patient” you can make an appointment by calling 250 388-6811. If you are without a Primary Health Care provider because you have never been able to find a provider who is accepting new “patients” or because a practice has closed, please contact the CCHC Manager, Shelley Gurvey at 250 388-6811 extension 8 to ask about the possibility of becoming a patient at the CCHC. As you will understand, this is always a fluid situation depending on demand. Our aim is to provide excellent care and for this we must conscientiously support our hard-working practitioners and Medical Office Assistants: Jane, Neeraj and Sherri.

Complementary and Alternative Medical (CAM) Practitioners at the CCHC.
